I received a message on Facebook today from someone who I admire. Meeting them this year, I couldn’t help but stare in awe every time they spoke up, feeling each word in my heart/soul. They let me know that they wanted to participate in the #transTRUTH selfie campaign but weren’t out and asked me to write this out and share… and I realized what I hadn’t focused on beforehand. Our projects, campaigns and work as trans activists are not only to celebrate the trans lives already being lived truly, but to make room for the folks who haven’t stepped out and will eventually. I live in my truth so others can feel welcomed, supported, and loved. FOR A.G. & EVERY TRANS/GNC PERSON, OUR #transTRUTH IS LIVING EVERY DAY, PREPARING THE WORLD FOR THE MOMENT YOU ARE SAFELY AND ABLE TO LIVE YOUR #transTRUTH. In solidarity sisters, brothers, and siblings!

Hi, Internet.

I don’t normally do this, but this is srsly important stuff srsly, so you know, please read the whole thing.

Over the past few months, I’ve gotten involved with the Transgender Law Center here in SF. I’ve been amazed at how this team of fewer than 20 people not only advocates effectively for change, but also converses diplomatically with bigots and fearmongers. They are the largest organization advocating for trans* rights in the US (remember that part about fewer than 20 people?) and have accomplished a TON in only 11 years of existence.

Regardless of your religious or political persuasion, you’d be hard pressed to come up with a sound, unemotional argument as to why someone shouldn’t be able to live their life as the human they authentically are. Many of us who are cisgender gay/lesbian/bi know how difficult it can be to live authentically (although good things are happening, obvz), but trans* individuals often deal with a whole other level of injustice.  I wouldn’t want to compare the two (they aren’t comparable), but my point is that perhaps we are best positioned to be allies to & advocates for our trans* friends.

It’s not my place to delve into the trans* experience so I’ll leave it at that. I’m asking for your help & support, whatever that might mean for you. With such a small team supporting requests for legal assistance from all over the country, anything you can do will make an impact.

So. Ways you can help:

1) Like TLC on Facebook or share one of their posts. If nothing else go to their page and check out the wealth of articles & resources. Their website, www.transgenderlawcenter.org, is also a great resource and has information on their latest social media campaign (#morethanmarriage), which I think is pretty fantastic.

2) Donate. $20 helps. $10 helps. You know you can afford it & you’d be contributing to the most authentic & motivated non-profit I’ve ever encountered (and those who know me know I’ve spent some srs time working with & for non-profits). For srsly, these guys are good people & your money will go to good use, no doubt. https://transgenderlawcenter.secure.force.com/donate

3) If you’re in San Francisco, TLC needs volunteers for Folsom Street Fair (Sunday, September 29th). Contact me if you’re interested & I’ll put you in touch with the right peeps.

Hokay, that’s all. Go back to looking at cat pictures and weird GIFs.  It would be super awesome if you could reblog this plz & maybe we could get TLC some visibility on Tumblr? You guys seem to be pretty good at that sort of thing.
