Two of the nation’s largest LGBT organizations, Equality California and Transgender Law Center, today commended the Sacramento Kings for building the world’s first entertainment and sports arena to fully accommodate transgender fans. Golden 1 Center, which is set to officially open on October 1, will have 23 all gender public restrooms throughout the arena.
Three transgender people were killed in San Juan Talpa in February alone, police say, spreading fear through members of El Salvador’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community.
The spate of murders puts a spotlight on the violence El Salvador’s LGBT community faces, a problem rights activists blame on powerful street gangs and entrenched social prejudices.
Until recently, the LGBT community in San Luis Talpa, a town surrounded by fertile green hills an hour’s drive from the capital San Salvador, had a softball team that used to play near the beach. But they have since stopped in fear they could be next in the firing line.
For the first time in its history, National Geographic will feature a trans person on its cover. Avery Jackson, a 9-year-old transgender girl from Kansas City, will appear on the subscriber cover of the magazine’s January 2017 issue in a portrait shot by photographer Robin Hammond. “The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy,” Avery says in the photo’s caption.
Even amid the swell of anti-LGBT legislation being introduced by conservative lawmakers, it would be wrong to make assumptions and generalize about religious people and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, rights. Communities of faith are broadly supportive of the LGBT community, including transgender people. People of faith are especially concerned about bullying and protecting transgender people through comprehensive nondiscrimination policies, and many have expressed their support for the transgender community through the passage and implementation of denominationwide policies. In fact, apart from a small vocal minority, many diverse faith traditions show majority support for transgender rights and inclusionary policies both in and outside houses of worship.
McCrory, who became the first sitting North Carolina governor to lose a re-election bid, was weighed down by a series of divisive laws he signed, including House Bill 2.
That law limited LGBT rights and directed transgender people to use restrooms in schools and government buildings corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificates. It led to companies, sports organizations and entertainers pulling their business from the state, costing hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in spending.

This July marked a new chapter for trans advocacy at the International AIDS Conference held in Durban, South Africa. For the first year ever, there was a trans-specific pre-conference, and thanks to the support of Elton John AIDS Foundation, Ford Foundation and individual donors, Transgender Law Center was able to provide partial support to a total of seven delegates, six of whom are transgender people living with HIV, to travel to the conference from the United States.
“With his position on the city’s bodybuilding team, Kendy has become a role model in the local LGBTQ community, which is facing a turning point in the fight for equality.“Since I came out, some transgender people I know have been more open,” he says. “They don’t hide themselves anymore.”
On Sept. 16-17, TLC, GSA Network and Trans Youth - Truth Project will host a two-day organizing workshop for transgender and gender nonconforming youth of color (14-21) in the East Bay Area.
