California court issues nonbinary gender change to TLC client - a.t. furuya

San Diego, CA – Today, a court granted a name and gender change to Transgender Law Center client a.t. furuya, making a.t. the second person in California and the third in the country to obtain “nonbinary” as their legally designated gender.
“For the first time, I feel seen for who I am and not torn in two directions,” said a.t., a 34-year-old from San Diego who uses they/them pronouns. “Whenever I go to the bank or a bar or the airport, I get anxious about showing my I.D. with its line that says ‘female.’ I never know which box someone will try to put me in, and since I don’t fit either, people often don’t know what to do with me. I know it will take people a while to understand what it means to be nonbinary, but this order means I am not on my own anymore – my state recognizes me.”

That law limited LGBT rights and directed transgender people to use restrooms in schools and government buildings corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificates. It led to companies, sports organizations and entertainers pulling their business from the state, costing hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in spending.

3 trans women were murdered in Mexico in the past 2 weeks. Paola Ledezma, Itzel Durán & Alessa Flores. #RestInPower

Paola Ledezma, Itzel Durán and Alessa Flores are the names of three transgender women murdered in Mexico in the past two weeks. The responsibility for these murders goes beyond those who shot, stabbed and strangled them. We are complicit as a society. At least 265 trans people have been killed in Mexico since 1995. And we should take responsibility.
